Beginning in early 2027, the world’s oceans will be patrolled and protected by a second USS Utah.

The famous first USS Utah (BB-31) was a battleship destroyed by Japanese torpedoes on Dec. 7, 1941 in the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor that pulled the United States into World War II.

Now there will be a second USS Utah (SSN-801), but this one will conduct its missions beneath the ocean surface as a Virginia Class fast attack nuclear submarine.

Tim Martin, a Blue and Gold Officer from the United States Naval Academy, gave a progress report on the submarine’s construction in presentations to the public on Wednesday at the Utah Tech Innovation Plaza in St. George.
