BOULEVARD — A Brawley couple says they were racially profiled and wrongfully detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents while driving near McCain Valley Recreation Area on their way to a dental appointment, recording the interaction and questioning the legitimacy of the stop, NBC San Diego reported.
George and Esmeralda Doilez, both U.S. citizens, said they were scouting campsites in the Jacumba area for the first time Wednesday morning when a dark SUV began following them. The vehicle eventually activated a siren and pulled them over, though it was unmarked.
“We didn’t think we had anything to worry about,” George said in an interview.
The couple said the agents initially approached wearing masks, which alarmed them.
