Birmingham-area immigration advocate Giovanna Martinez, otherwise known as Giovanna Hernandez-Martinez, has been moved to an ICE detention facility in Louisiana after she was detained this week during a traffic stop.

According to ICE records , Martinez is currently being held at Richwood Correctional Center in Richwood, La.

“I understand our country’s immigration system needs change, but this is not justice,” wrote Martinez’s friend and former college roommate Emily Barfield in a post to Facebook.

“We’ve had years of whiplash with shifting presidential policies, and through it all, Gio (and even me) has fought to help secure her legal status.”

Much of Martinez’s work focused on helping immigrant students in the metro area plan their next steps after high school.
