Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced calls from the US to “sit this one out” on Gaza, after he warned the Israeli government against pursuing plans to take over Gaza City .

Washington’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, made the remarks on Friday and also claimed that if Starmer had been in No 10 during the Second World War, Britain would have lost.

Earlier on Friday, US Vice President JD Vance spoke of a “disagreement” over how the US and UK could achieve their "common objectives" in the Middle East, adding that Donald Trump’s administration had "no plans to recognise a Palestinian state".
