Jerry Diorio of Auburn ran a construction management company before he retired last year to shore up a foundation of his life: camping.

Growing up outside Boston, Diorio camped for 17 years with his parents, then another 25 years with his wife, children and grandchildren, first in a pup tent, then a tent in the back of a truck, followed by many forms of campers, driven or towed. His latest, a motor home, resembles a condominium on wheels, with three televisions, a theater system, central air and vacuum, and a kitchen with built-in appliances.

It may be a softer experience, but the purpose of camping remains unchanged.
