BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — According to the Cleveland Clinic , there are over seven million people with Parkinson’s disease worldwide and of those, between 75 and 90% will develop speech or voice problems. There is a new program at Western Kentucky University helping some to find their voice again.

Dr. Amy Engelhoven has been an assistant professor for WKU’s Department of Communication and Science Disorders for three years.

She researches and teaches about voice and speech disorders.

Engelhoven said, “Speech is the vehicle for language. Without the ability to speak or communicate, we can’t convey our wants and needs.”

The WKU Communication Disorders Clinic launched a new program called SPEAK OUT!

The program hopes to help people with Parkinson’s disease regain their ability to speak.
