Gastonia city leaders made a final decision recently on the fate of the cooling station at 107 S. Broad St.

The station will continue to operate outdoors when the weather is 90-94 degrees and indoors when the weather is above 95 degrees through Sept. 12.

In the 20 days between council’s temporary ruling on the station at a July 15 meeting and its most recent meeting on Aug. 5, City Manager Michael Peoples said the station has seen: • Sixteen days of operation, nine indoors and seven outdoors • An average of 26 people using the indoor services • 237 total participants indoors over 81 hours • A total of 382.5 staff hours worked for the station’s operation • A total operational cost to-date of around $14,000
