The former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg has been arrested for supporting banned group Palestine Action .

Mr Begg, who was detained by US authorities between 2002 and 2005 before his release without charge, was among more than 50 protesters arrested for holding up signs that read: “I support Palestine Action”.

Campaigners had laid plans for hundreds of supporters, including Left-wing activists and members of the Muslim community, to openly declare support for Palestine Action in defiance of the Terrorism Act 2000.

They had pledged to overwhelm the criminal justice system at Saturday’s demonstration.

Mr Begg was previously held by Pakistani authorities and handed over to the US after he was accused of being a member of al-Qaeda.
