Rufina Kaltenberger didn’t start quilting until after she retired at the age of 62. That was over 40 years ago.

The now 103-year-old Windsor resident has been submitting her quilting, cross-stitching and embroidering to the Larimer County Fair, as well as other local fairs throughout the area, ever since.

Born on a farm to German-Russian immigrants near Wellington, Kaltenberger remained a farm girl for much of her life.

“Everybody worked together, so that’s how we made a living,” she explained. “I crawled up and down the rows and thinned beets to start, and as I grew older I milked cows and worked in the field, until I graduated high school.”
