NEW YORK CITY, New York -- A bustling night in New York City’s Times Square erupted into chaos when it erupted by gunfire, leaving three people injured and sending crowds scrambling for safety, the Associated Press reported .

A 17-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene, and a firearm was recovered. As of Saturday afternoon, police had not yet announced formal charges, but the investigation is ongoing, AP said.

The news service said the shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday near West 44th Street and 7th Avenue. The shooting was close to the Hard Rock Café, a prime tourist spot in the heart of the city.
