Judge Walter Williams, known for being a colorful character and towering figure in Chattanooga's legal community, died Friday.

Born in the city and raised in public housing, Judge Williams later became a graduate of Morehouse College, an honors graduate of Howard University School of Law, and eventually presided as the City Court Judge from 1991 to 2003, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center stated.

"On the bench, he was known for his no-nonsense style, creative alternative sentences, and unwavering belief that 'education is the key to success,'" the history museum stated.

Beyond the courtroom, Williams led several community revitalization efforts, and inspired others through his service, mentorship, and faith.
