LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - On Saturday, veterans from the Second World War took to the skies in a vintage plane, honoring their service in the war.
This comes just weeks away from the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII on September 2, 1945.
Several area WWII veterans were able to take part in the flight, including 100-year-old Lee Smith, an avid aviator.
“I always relate to the propeller-driven bombers of WWII,” Smith said.
This WWII bomber served in the 310th Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing of the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy, completing over 130 missions.
“It was a fantastic airplane, it was multiuse,” Smith said. “It was a medium bomber, and it would be configured as a medium bomber.”
