EUGENE — Defense had the more impressive performance in Oregon’s first fall scrimmage.

The offense fared better earlier in the week, particularly inside the red zone and creating some explosive plays, but Dan Lanning said the defense got three-and-outs and eliminated big plays in the closed scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Autzen Stadium.

Much of the credit goes to a reloading secondary, which has to replace all five starters from last season.

Lanning was particularly pleased with the communication in the defensive backfield on Saturday.

“When you can get 11 guys playing the same call you got a chance,” Lanning said. “Very few moments where there was confusion on the back end.”

There wasn’t anything that stood out to Lanning about quarterback Dante Moore’s play in the scrimmage, though
