Tulane’s first scrimmage of preseason camp looked nothing like the last scrimmage of spring practice.
Brendan Sullivan and Jake Retzlaff, the quarterbacks who played the opening two possessions, were not even on the roster when the Green Wave conducted its spring game in April. The success they had on Saturday night at Yulman Stadium also was completely different than what happened on that day.
Sullivan, who transferred from Iowa in late May, completed all three of his passes on the initial series, converting third downs on the first two, including a 16-yard strike to Omari Hayes on a crossing route. Those plays set up an 18-yard touchdown run by Maurice Turner, who cut to the outside and raced around the corner to beat the defense to the end zone.
