A U.S. senator’s discovery that the CEO of America’s largest home-grown computer chip maker has deep ties to China raises profound questions about the direction of Intel, whose company is of critical importance to Ohio.
Lip-Bu Tan, appointed just a year ago to take over the troubled microprocessor manufacturer, is alleged by Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) to have ownership ties to numerous Chinese businesses, of which at least eight are known to have connections with the Chinese military.
Not only that but the computer design company Mr. Tan previously ran, Cadence, last week pleaded guilty to illegally selling products to the Chinese military and transferring technology to a Chinese company without obtaining the correct licenses. Those crimes occurred under Mr. Tan’s leadership.
