SEATTLE — A sellout crowd packed T-Mobile Park on Saturday for the jersey retirement of Mariners legend Ichiro Suzuki , the highlight of a nearly weeklong slate of events honoring the recently inducted Baseball Hall of Famer.
Fans traveled from across the country and around the world, including Japan, where Suzuki was born and played the first eight seasons of his professional career.
A family from Alaska claimed the first spot in line outside the home plate entrance at 11 a.m., hours before the ceremony. By the time the pregame program began, fans were still streaming into the ballpark.
"We came here to celebrate Ichiro! Gotta represent! Even though he's not from Seattle, he's part of our hometown. He's one of our hometown heroes. He's a legend among legends," said Sarah Bailey.
