As he stepped up the 18th tee box, Mathew Sutherland of Sacramento, California, was tied for the lead in the 2025 Sinclair Rocky Mountain Open.

Sutherland was in a dead heat with Josh Anderson, who shot an 8-under-par 63, had birdied the final hole one grouping ahead to put the pressure on the 24-year-old Sutherland. Sutherland’s final tee shot of the tournament went perilously far right of the 18th green. But a lucky bounce off the cart path allowed his ball to remain in play.

At first, Sutherland couldn’t see where the ball had landed. Colorado Mesa senior Timmy Cavarno, who was sitting just past the green after finished his round earlier in the afternoon, stood up and made a ‘you’re safe’ signal with his arms, not unlike what an umpire would use for a close play at the plate in a base
