Turkey has been rocked by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake .

Residents of Istanbul reported feeling tremors after the quake struck just before 8pm local time.

The epicentre was in Balikesir in Turkey 's Marmara region, where footage on social media showed at least one property had been destroyed by the force of the rumble.

Mayor says more than 10 buildings downed by devastating quake

Local media is reporting that 10 buildings have collapsed after an earthquake tore through Turkey.

The Mayor of Serkan Sak, one of the worst-affected areas, said: “More than 10 buildings in our district have collapsed. Some are single-storey, some are two-storey, and some are three-storey. Due to GSM operators not functioning, we are unable to obtain information from some villages.”
