Former Greensboro Mayor Edwin Samuel “Jim” Melvin has died.

Melvin, 91, died Sunday morning.

He had been in declining health, said President and CEO of the Greensboro Sports Foundation Richard Beard.

Melvin was a member of the sports foundation board of directors and served as president of the Joseph Bryan Foundation, a Greensboro nonprofit.

He served 10 years as mayor, with his last term ending in 1981.

“He has the reputation across the state as Mr. Greensboro,” said James Solomon told the News & Record in 2021.

Melvin credited his parents for his drive to make Greensboro a better place.

“I was always taught by my parents to give back. I kept giving back, and one thing led to another,” Melvin said in a 2021 interview.
