MADRID, N.M. —
New Mexico State Police is investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday near Madrid.
A spokesperson for NMSP said officers received a call around 11 p.m. Saturday.
The victim was located on NM-14 near mile marker 25, with at least one gunshot wound. NM-14 was closed for several hours but was reopened around 12 p.m. Sunday.
The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Patrick Wheeler. His death was confirmed by the state Office of the Medical Investigator.
A suspect has not been identified or taken into custody. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police.
