LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - When UK Student Hayden Wheeler microchipped her cat, Toot, she never thought it could turn into a matter of life or death.

“It just didn’t make sense not to do it because, what if? And had we not, he wouldn’t be here today,” Wheeler says.

Toot went missing last year.

“As soon as I realized he was missing, I had my apartment complex send out an email,” Wheeler says.

That’s when Wheeler got a text from a neighbor. They said their car wasn’t running properly on their way home from the grocery store in Tates Creek.

Then, a black cat ran out of their car hood.

Five miles away from her house is where Wheeler started her seven week search.

“I got a phone call from an unknown number and it said ‘pet link’ under it,” Wheeler says.
