Three lanes on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago were shut down early Monday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the roadway, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin confirmed.

The incident happened about 4:30 a.m. in the inbound lanes near 76th Street, Martin said.

As of 5:30 a.m., three right lanes on the inbound side were blocked, with one getting by.

It wasn't immediately clear why a pedestrian was in the roadway, Martin said. Morning commuters should enter the Dan Ryan at 71st St. or further north, Martin added.

No further details were available, the Illinois State Police didn't immediately respond to NBC Chicago's request for comment.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
