The University of Regina Rams got rained on during their first workout of training camp, symbolically at least washing away a long, tough offseason of recalling their oh-so-close shot at a national championship and dealing with the troubling, high-profile arrests of two players from a drug trafficking investigation.

Those memories remain, even with an important U Sports football season ahead.

As the Rams walked off the university’s rain-soaked football field Saturday, head coach Mark McConkey was asked when his team’s 17-14 loss nine months ago to Laval in the 2024 Mitchell Bowl stopped hurting.

“Yesterday,” said McConkey.

“It hurt for awhile, definitely. Especially because it was so close. Probably by January we moved on. And we’re using that as fuel for this year.”
