The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who went missing while swimming in Lake Erie on Sunday, August 10.
Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, of Dearborn, and four other adults were operating a white Baja boat on the lake, several hundred yards east of the Sandy Creek/Sterling State Park boat channel. When they jumped from the boat to swim, Hassoun started struggling and went underwater.
Monroe County Central Dispatch received a call at 5:49 p.m. reporting the incident. A rescue boat from the Frenchtown Township Fire Department located the boat and escorted it safely back to shore. The sheriff's office's dive team, and dive teams from the Southeast Michigan Dive Group, began searching for Hassoun, but the search was suspended at 11 p.m. due to unsafe wave conditions. The search
