As Houston ISD students head back to class on Tuesday, the weather looks like a fairly typical late-August day.

Tuesday will be hot, humid, and have a chance of afternoon storms. The forecast calls for a high of 94° with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. This is right in line with what we’ve seen over the past two decades.

A History of Hot Starts:

Looking back at the last 20 years, the average first-day high for HISD is a steamy 94.8°, with the average low a warm 75.8°. Half of those first days reached 95° or hotter, and one in four climbed to at least 99°. The hottest start to the school year came on August 23, 2010, when the thermometer hit 102°.
