Embattled Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) attempted to make himself look good to President Donald Trump on Monday amid polls showing mortal danger for him in the upcoming primary — but it didn't work out well for him.

Cornyn is facing a well-funded and high-profile challenge by state Attorney General Ken Paxton, and the two have been at each other's throats for months, with Cornyn knocking Paxton's history of legal issues and accusing him of being absent from the legislative standoff as Democrats left the state to paralyze passage of a new gerrymandered congressional map.

For all that, though, he hasn't managed to attract Trump's endorsement, the one thing his team believes could turn things around. And on Monday, he posted a spirited attack on Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) following Trump's own racially-charged Truth Social rant calling her "low IQ."

"I hope she is the Democratic nominee for the Texas Senate race next year," wrote Cornyn. "A Momdani Democrat! Should be fun!" (Presumably being a misspelled reference to progressive New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.)

However, this tweet prompted instant blowback — and not just from Democrats and supporters of Crockett. Some MAGA commenters who saw it as cheap pandering.

"And she endorsed you last week! How fun!" wrote right-wing pastor Daniel Hayworth.

"Well, I guess we know who you will be supporting against @KenPaxtonTX, who will be the Republican nominee for that seat," wrote Bo French, the chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party.

"Why is your low level staffer continuously editing this post to delete my comment from it?" wrote Breanna Morello, a podcaster who claims to have left Fox over COVID-19 mandates, and who Cornyn initially reposted after she shared Trump's Truth Social rant on X.

"Again: Sir, please don’t quote tweet my posts. I don’t want people thinking I align with Deep State hacks that lie about FISA to the American people. You’ve been useless for Texans. We fully support Ken Paxton as your replacement."
