Asher Watkins tragically lost his life to the same buffalo he was trying to kill.

The American millionaire and big game hunter, from the prominent Watkins Ranch Group in Dallas, was killed by a Cape buffalo during a hunting trip with Coenraad Vermaak Safaris in South Africa on Sunday, August 3rd.

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris confirmed to PEOPLE that the 52-year-old died in a “sudden unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.”

He was said to be tracking the buffalo together with a professional hunter and tracker from Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.

“This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his loved ones,” Hans Vermaak said in the statement to PEOPLE.
