Hamilton County election officials want to eliminate precinct assignments in favor of vote centers during elections, saving the county money and increasing flexibility for voters.

Sixty-seven of Indiana’s 92 counties, including Marion County, have switched to the centers, which reduce the number of polling places and often require voters to travel farther to cast a ballot — but also allows them to vote at any center.

“It really increases options for people who work and weren’t able to get to the precinct in the morning or later,” County Elections Administrator Beth Sheller said.
