A wide range of economists, including liberals like Paul Krugman and Robert Reich as well as conservative admirers of the late Milton Friedman, are warning that countless imported goods will soar in price in the months to come thanks to President Donald Trump's steep tariffs — from fruits, vegetables and coffee to electronics to washing machines to building and construction materials.
Far-right Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) recently acknowledged that tariffs are resulting in price increases but claimed that Trump's tariffs will bring widespread prosperity in the future.
Norman, during a Sunday, August 10 appearance on Fox News, argued, "I think a lot of people are seeing higher prices. Our family's in the construction business, and we get a lot of our timber from Canada and other countries. Yes, it's higher. Steel prices are up, but it's for the good of the country."

Norman's comments are generating a lot of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted, "Fox Reporter: Americans disapprove of the economic policies of this President, 55 [percent]. Can you explain? GOP Congressman: I think a lot of people are seeing higher prices."
Physiologist Dave Champion posted, "While acknowledging prices are increasing on many things (including food), a MAGA congressman just dismissed those increasing prices by saying they are 'good for America.' I guess he doesn't see American families as 'America.'"
Liberal author John T. Marohn wrote, "So, 'high prices' are now 'for the good of the country'? that's the b—— the GOP is selling us? Those prices in the long run will go down? Or Americans will get this surge of rising incomes? At least go out for consumers with some kind of Health Care relief or regulations."

X user Joseph Jones commented, "GOP congressman tells Americans ‘prices are up ... for the good of the country.' Who voted for this guy? His voters want prices to go up, and up, higher and higher? The [R]epublicans have funny reasons to vote for someone."
Another X user, Chet Kinkaid, tweeted, " Really?? South Carolina Republican: High prices are ‘for the good of the country’
