GARLAND, Texas — An inmate has died after he was found unresponsive at a North Texas jail, officials say.

Garland police say a male inmate was found unconscious and unresponsive shortly after 5 p.m. Aug. 10.

The man had been arrested Aug. 8 and booked into the Garland Detention Center on complaints of possession of fentanyl between 4 and 200 grams and tampering with evidence, police say.

The man had complained of feeling ill Aug. 9 and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, according to a press release. After being checked out by medical staff, the man was released from hospital and taken back into custody, officials say.

Then, on Aug. 10, the man was found unresponsive during a routine jail check and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, officials say
