AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the first time in program history, the Texas Longhorns are the preseason No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings.

The Longhorns eked out the top spot by five points over Penn State, earning 25 first-place votes and 1,552 points. The Nittany Lions received 23 first-place votes for 1,547 points, and Ohio State — the Longhorns' season-opening opponent Aug. 30 — came in at No. 3 with 1,472 points and 11 first-place votes. It's the fifth consecutive season that a Southeastern Conference team is No. 1 in the preseason.

The Longhorns and the Buckeyes were the top two teams in the preseason USA Today Sports/US LBM coaches poll last week.

Clemson and Georgia rounded out the top five teams. In all, there are 10 SEC teams in the preseason poll, with four in the top 10. Al
