CLAIRTON, PA (LOOTPRESS) — An explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton plant on Monday killed at least one person and injured dozens more, officials confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. after the blast occurred inside the “reversing room” of the 13/15 battery, a mechanical regulator that ensures coal bakes evenly in the oven. Several people were reportedly trapped under rubble as rescue operations continued throughout the day.

UPMC officials confirmed two patients were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, while Allegheny Health Network reported multiple patients were being treated at its hospitals.
