NEW YORK (PIX11) — Electric vehicles will no longer get special treatment on the Long Island Expressway this fall.
New York's Clean Pass Program, which has enabled EVs and environmentally-friendly cars to ride in the HOV lanes on the LIE for years, is set to end on Sept. 30 of this year.
The program was enacted in 2006 through federal legislative authorization, according to the Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy.
The DOT website says Congress and President Trump have not reauthorized the program, meaning EVs and hybrid vehicles will no longer be able to use the HOV lanes unless they meet the occupancy requirements of two or three riders during operating hours.
The new rules will go into effect on Oct. 1 for EV operators.
