Convicted felon and President Donald Trump announced during a Monday morning press conference that he’s taking control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deploying 800 National Guard troops in the city as he declared a public safety emergency.

Trump pledged to “rescue” D.C., which he described as a hellish, crime-ridden place full of “squalor, bedlam, and worse.”

In a rambling, hourlong announcement from the White House briefing room, Trump rattled off misleading crime stats and claimed D.C. has been overrun by “violent gangs, roving mobs of wild youth, and drugged-out maniacs.”
