PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The state of Washington is suing the Trump administration for withholding funds meant to help the state address the impacts of climate change.

Washington Attorney General Nick Brown filed the lawsuit on Aug. 8 in Seattle against the United States Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for withholding more than $9 million in climate funds authorized by Congress.

In a press release announcing the lawsuit, Brown’s office emphasized the importance of the funds as climate change has increased the frequency and severity of life-threatening hazards in the state, including heatwaves, wildfires, drought and flooding.
