The main building at Gateway School is set to be demolished in September.

In a Mesa County Valley School District 51 Board of Education meeting on Aug. 5, D51 Chief Operations Officer Clint Garcia detailed the reasons why the district has opted to demolish the 1946 main building.

“It’s not the entire campus we’re looking at demolishing. It’s one building. It’s the schoolhouse itself where most of the classrooms are. That building has a few little apartments in it in the downstairs area with classrooms on the other side. It’s deteriorated significantly,” Garcia said. “The rest of those buildings that surround it will stay, and we plan to use those.”

Garcia noted that the demolition would not use any bond funds that are paying for other projects across the district.
