Tropical Atlantic Starting to Wake Up

While the Pacific and Central Pacific have been busy this year with multiple named storms, the Atlantic hurricane season has been fairly quiet so far. A few named systems have formed recently, but none have brought significant impacts to land.

Tracking Tropical Storm Erin

Tropical Storm Erin has officially formed just west of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.

As of this afternoon, it’s packing winds of about 45 mph and moving west at a steady 20 mph. It’s still way out in the open ocean, about 280 miles northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and more than 2,300 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands.

The storm is expected to gradually strengthen over the next few days, reaching Category 3 Hurricane status by late Friday or early Sat
