Judge Paul A. Engelmayer called out President Donald Trump's administration for what he called a "disingenuous" effort to unseal the grand jury documents around Jeffrey Epstein.

Legal analysts were quick to point out the harshness of the judge's language.

"Judge UNLOADS on Trump DOJ Maxwell grand jury gambit," described Adam Klasfeld, who runs "All Rise News," a legal and political news publication.

He pointed out a key citation from the judge.

"The one colorable argument under that doctrine for unsealing in this case, in fact, is that doing so would expose as disingenuous the Government’s public explanations for moving to unseal." It's "aimed not at 'transparency' but at diversion."

He also pointed to the judge's remark that releasing the grand jury material would deliver next to nothing that isn't already public.

"Legal experts roundly predicted that Trump DOJ's grand jury unsealing gambit would: 1. Uncover nothing new 2. Unlikely win given traditional grand jury secrecy," added Klasfeld. "This ruling vindicates both lines of analysis — and to be clear, DOJ *also* confirmed there was nothing new here."

"Oops!" exclaimed Quinta Jurecic, who writes about law and democracy for The Atlantic. She was referencing an excerpt from the judge, reading, "Second, any argument that the Government's motion to unseal merits substantial deference is weakened by a host of irregularities with respect to that motion."

Michigan law professor and author Leah Litman commented about Jurecic's emphasis, noting, "There goes the presumption of regularity, again."

"This is not to say the judge did anything wrong, he didn't! Just pointing out that the presumption is a presumption and it can and should be rebutted by ... irregularities," she added.

National security analyst Marcy Wheeler directly mentioned Justice Department official Todd Blanche, saying that the judge wrote he "was d---ing around with his grand jury unsealing request."

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) remarked about the matter, "Epstein is the BIGGEST political scandal in my lifetime. The president of the United States is connected to the most notorious child-sex-trafficker ever AND is covering up his own involvement. Tell me what’s bigger than THAT?"
