LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- In just a few days, more than half a million students in the Los Angeles Unified School District will go back to school, and that comes with some safety - and traffic - concerns.

The first day of school for LAUSD is Thursday, and to prepare, the Los Angeles Police Department is taking extra precautions, sending out more officers to monitor school zones.

"We'll be partnering with school police so that we'll have a larger presence, particularly the first two weeks," said LAPD Ofc. Chris Roth.

Last year, more than 500 crossing guards were added to schools across the district.

Plus, hundreds of "school slow zones" were established, changing the speed limit to 15 miles per hour in areas around 190 LAUSD campuses.

There are also more speed bumps now, as well.
