DETROIT - One of Detroit’s biggest eyesores of the last quarter century is finally being demolished following a two year legal battle.
Detroit’s Construction and Demolition Department began taking down the Mammoth Building, site of a former department store, at the intersection of Grand River and Greenfield.
The building first opened in 1949 as Federals Department Store, operating until the 1970s when it was replaced with Kingsway Department Store.
It later became Mammoth Department Store in 1990 before closing in 2000 where it has sat abandoned for a quarter century.
The City of Detroit filed a nuisance abatement lawsuit in 2023, following years of issuing blight tickets, to try to get the owner at the time to remedy the blight through repairs or demolition.
