LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Ford CEO Jim Farley called it the company’s most radical change since the Model-T.
The automaker will spend nearly $2 billion to retool its Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) to build electric vehicles (EVs).
“We came up with a brand-new concept, a brand-new vehicle, and a better way of making a car after 122 years,” Farley told LAP workers Monday.
The company managed to keep the plan secret for years and details are still not public.
Ford calls it a “Universal EV Production System” and “Universal EV Platform.”
More than just a new electric vehicle, the LAP will launch a new way of making them.
LAP will shut down for eight to 10 months, possibly beginning in December.
The plant will undergo a $2 billion retooling that abandons the traditional assembly line.
