South Carolina Rep. R.J. May, who is facing federal charges related to child sexual abuse material, has resigned, according to officials.

South Carolina House Speaker Murrell Smith announced on Monday, that May resigned from his position as representative of District 88 in Lexington County.

Last week , Rep. Jordan Pace called on the General Assembly to reconvene to consider the expulsion of May.

In June , the U.S. Attorney's Office accused May of sharing videos depicting child sexual abuse material on the social messaging app Kik under the username "joebidennnn69."

May was denied bond by a federal judge and remains in custody until trial.
