LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - About 20,000 students in Laredo Independent School District (LISD) started the new school year Monday, August 11 , marking the first day back to the classroom for many and a fresh start under new leadership.
At Ryan Elementary School, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and hope. Second grader Felipe Tovar was among the eager students getting ready for the year ahead.
“Sometimes I come late because my parents do not wake me up,” Felipe said with a smile. “But today they woke me up.”
Felipe shared his big dreams of becoming a storm chaser one day, but said he knows excelling in school is important. “In the movie ‘Twisters,’ they chase tornadoes with an odometer, but that might cost me $250,000. Also, if I get straight A’s, I’m gonna be a YouTuber,” he added.
