NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Emotional testimony from a father, a plaintive account on a 911 call and a troubling image of the victim were part of day one of the murder trial of Jalen Garces, 30, charged in the 2023 shooting death of Ali Muhammad, 33.

Muhammad was shot in the parking lot of his apartment complex on 1st Bay Street. His father, Bilal Muhammad, is an outspoken activist and crusader against gun violence in Hampton Roads. and he testified late Monday afternoon. He has said several times he was on the phone with Ali Muhammad at the time he was shot, overhearing his son say "Get that gun out of my face."
