LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Local leaders gathered in Lansing on Monday to address the rising threat of extreme weather in Michigan, warning that climate change is driving stronger and more costly storms.

Mayor Andy Schor stressed the urgency: “Because of climate change, because of extreme weather, we know the next one’s going to come. There’s no need to bury your head in the sand and say it’s not coming.”

The city is still recovering from the damaging tornado outbreak in May, which caused millions in damages and left many residents facing months of cleanup and repair.

Rep. Emily Dievendorf highlighted the human impact, saying, “it’s people’s lives. It’s their livelihoods. It’s their stability. In many cases, it’s their real ability to survive a storm.” She also warned that disasters deepen
