MINNEAPOLIS — If Deshaun Hill had not been murdered at age 15 in February 2022, right now he would be preparing for college football. But instead, this fall, his family is preparing for the retrial of his alleged killer.

A jury convicted Cody Fohrenkam of 2nd-degree murder, and Judge Julie Allyn sentenced him to 38 years in prison. In May 2024, the Minnesota Court of Appeals reversed the conviction over an issue involving his police interrogation.

A Minneapolis Police detective interviewed Fohrenkam in Carlton County, where he was being held days after the shooting for an unrelated matter. Fohrenkam's attorneys argued that Carlton County authorities held him there too long so that MPD could talk to him.
