WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Today the Texas House once again failed to meet quorum after house democrats fled the state to stop republicans’ from passing a new congressional map.
However, this isn’t the first time house democrats have broken quorum over a mid-decade redistricting effort.
Jim Dunnam, who is now an attorney in Waco, was the house democratic leader in 2003 when more than 50 democrats broke quorum by fleeing to Ardmore, Oklahoma.
“I talk to my colleagues regularly that went with me in 2003, and it’s one of the proudest things they ever did,” he shared.
Dunnam says this all started when house-majority leader Tom DeLay began pushing to redraw the congressional map, after they had just redrawn the map during the 2001 legislative session.
