A prominent Democrat gave Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott a brutal civics lesson on Monday.
Abbott has claimed that Texas Democrats who broke quorum during a special session have violated their constitutional duty and called for their removal from office. He further insulted the Democrats on Monday afternoon during "The Lead with Jake Tapper" by calling them "chickens" for fleeing to Illinois.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), a former Texas state legislator, responded to Abbott's claims during a later segment of the show.
"I know our governor has not practiced law too recently, but I would like to inform him, if he cares to know, that our Texas constitution specifically provides for being able to break quorum," Crockett said. "That is in our constitution!"
Crockett was a state legislator the last time that Texas Democrats fled the state in 2021 to prevent the legislature from passing a bill to limit voting access in Texas.
She also noted that President Donald Trump appears to be forcing Texas Republicans to go through with the redistricting effort. Crockett also described Abbott as a "weakling" for trying to intimidate Democrats.
"It is not the people of Texas who elected the governor to do this work," Crockett said. "It's the criminal that's currently serving in the White House that begs for him to do this."
