Ilive in Lakewood. When I moved here 50 years ago, it was segregated. Black people driving through were liable to be stopped. It slowly began to integrate and now has a fairly diverse population. It is a nicer place to live.
Immigrants and people of color moved in, adding to our city’s culture. Many bigots moved away. Some former neighbors used the code words that Lakewood “has changed.” Glad they left.
Our government is working to return our country to the bigoted days of the ’50s. Heavily armed and masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents patrol our streets, terrorizing hardworking people, even children, and violating their human rights. And denying health care to sick people unless they work? These are the actions of a society in decline.
