Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse football’s speedy freshman wide receiver Darius “Boobie” Johnson will be sidelined for the next five weeks after suffering a fibula fracture.

Johnson had a bright blue cast on his lower right leg on Monday and navigated the practice field via a scooter.

Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said that Johnson was already working with the Orange’s second team offense in practices.

“We’re sad too because he was running with the 2s,” Brown said. “He was running with the second group, with the third. ... He can catch the ball. He was like our little Wes Welker.”

Listed at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, Johnson’s speed and ability to change directions quickly makes him a natural fit in the slot for Syracuse.
